Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) flower is valued for its excellent keeping quality, wide array of colours and forms, and ability to rehydrate after continuous transportation. Carnation is indigenous to the Mediterranean areas. Due to high cost of production inside greenhouses in Europe and USA, its cultivation is shifting to more naturally-growing regions where they are being produced at lesser cost. In India, carnation culture is in a budding stage. Very few commercial varieties are seen in the market. Moderate climatic control measures that are economical can deliver quality carnations at the internationally competitive prices year round.

Tomatoes are grown in commercial quantities both in greenhouses and in the field. Fresh market tomatoes are usually marketed by fruit type. These types include full-size globe (red or yellow). Consumers buy tomatoes primarily for their appearance but are attracted to repeat purchases by flavor and quality. Tomatoes are very sensitive to mishandling and improper storage conditions. Because they can be injured by either low or high temperatures, proper post harvest handling and storage methods are essential for maintaining acceptable quality and promoting long shelf life.
Cucurbits are grown in commercial quantities both in greenhouses and in the field. Vegetable growers, for getting higher prices from their off-season produce, often try to send their produce to the market early in the season and also try to extend the growing season for selected vegetable crops for the purpose of obtaining marketing advantage of their off-season produce. For example, crops like long melon, round melon, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, muskmelon summer squash etc. if grown early in spring or early summer often command a greater price on the market. Also producing crop when large quantities of the crop produce are not available (considered as “off-season”) can also command greater prices and increased demand. Greenhouses are used to lengthen the growing season of crops. It protect the growing crop from environmental stress such as drought, driving rain, wind and temperature extremes. It also protect crops from insect and disease invasion. Greenhouses are well suited for producing heirloom and speciality vegetables which require a specific growing environment, also permit intensive crop production on a small area of lands.
